New Intern Arrives

Hi,

My name is Rebecca S. Rossow. I will be your new intern starting in September.

I was born in the year 1964, in Davenport, Iowa.  I am the youngest of a family of six and the only girl.  I have three older brothers. Most of my formative years were spent in Kingman, Arizona. This is where my mother still lives.  My father is deceased.

My immediate family lives with me in Las Vegas.  My husband’s name is Brian and we have been married for 15 years.  He is a pastor at Christ Lutheran Church, in Las Vegas.  He has been a pastor for 11 years.  I have two precocious sons Jered, age 10 and Nigel, age 7.  They are currently enrolled in a year round school at Ernest May Elementary.

My journey through education has been long but fruitful. I have a Bachelor’s of Arts in Religion from California Lutheran University, May 1986.  My Clinical Pastoral Education was done at Northwest Memorial Hospital in Houston, Texas in 1994.  I graduated from The Lutheran Theological Seminary of Philadelphia in May of 2000.

Yes, I have already graduated from seminary.  My internship will be what the ELCA refers to as a terminal internship. Internship will be my final step towards the ordained ministry.

Thank you for the opportunity to develop my ministry at Good Samaritan Lutheran Church.   I look forward to our shared ministry together in the spreading of the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Beach Camp Revisited

By Andrew Gentry

The time I spent at beach camp was a real pleasure for me because I got to meet a lot of new people.  There were a lot of new kids.  The staff members were really nice.  People would love going there.  I met new friends that I will never forget.  You people should send your kids there.  I think it would be a fun getaway for the parents and the kids.  I liked everything at Beach Camp except the games.  Well, you should know how that is, kids don’t like some things.  It is an out of this world experience and I think you should send your children or grandchildren.

God Bless all of you,

And always remember the Lord is your light that guides you through the hard times.

Prayer should be our first resource, not our last resort.

I.H.N. Update

We are pleased to report that the restructuring of the program and the renovations at the day site are progressing nicely.  Various youth groups and volunteer skilled laborers have been a tremendous resource.  With their generous support we have been able to accomplish deep cleaning, necessary reparations and the painting of the entire first floor at the day site.  Our hope is that the families will find comfort and renewal in the temporary "home" that has been beautified for them.

Interviewing for a new Executive Director is taking place in late August.  Host coordinators of each host site will meet on September 6th to meet the new director and choose host dates for 2002.

Blessings,
Julia Occhiogrosso

(Note: The following are captions from the above url.  A slide show of the referenced pictures can be followed at that url.)

Last year 3,000 Lutheran Congregations packed 2,000 tons of quilts for Lutheran World Relief. The most common question asked is "Where do the quilts go?"

(picture)

The Soviet-era Vector Factory used to make parts for nuclear weapons. It now houses 850 refugees who fled their homes in nearby Abkhazia when that province tried to secede from Georgia in the early 1990‘s. Inside the factory are basic kitchens, simple classrooms, bedrooms and bright and colorful LWR quilts.

A family in Rosarito, Mexico was given several quilts by Good Samaritan Lutheran Church of Las Vegas who, along with three other congregations, went to Rosarito to build two houses through Amor Ministries.

July 29th was Quilt Sunday at Good Samaritan Lutheran Church. 35 quilts were displayed on pews and the altar. A special swatch of quilt was made for the pulpit too.

Some thoughts on quilts.

"We make quilts like we make our lives-one step at a time….but with quilts we have the option of taking out and reworking the mistakes." Carter Houck

"Quilts have brought me many things. But the most precious one is many wonderful friendships." Atsuko Ohta

"Standing is stupid, crawling's a curse.

Skipping is silly, walking is worse. Running‘s ridiculous, jogging‘s insane.

Guess I'll sit down to my quilting again." Sheila Scawen

"Quilters make the best friends. The same qualities are found in both. Patient, careful and never stingy with their time." Carter Houck

"America is like a quilt-many pieces, many colors, many sizes, all woven together and held together by a common thread." Rev. Jesse Jackson

This fall, the quilters of Good Samaritan will be auctioning off a quilt at our Anniversary Dinner to raise money to pay the shipping costs to send their quilts to Lutheran World Relief.  Congregational matching funds will be provided by Lutheran Brotherhood Bonanza Branch #8237.

And I will pray the Father and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.

John 14:16 King James Version

See You in Church!
