Our project for this year is to raise money for a Risograph copy machine to print bulletins and posters and other advertising for the Grand Canyon, A Christian Ministry in the National Parks. Each year our Confirmation class worships with this community during their retreat at the Grand Canyon. Pastor Joe Surin is thrilled to have the financial help. This entire ministry is supported solely by the offerings each Sunday of tourists and year ‘round residents of the Grand Canyon. Pastor Joe oversees 20-25 college and seminary students each summer who lead 21 Protestant worship services each week at camp grounds and lodges in and around the Grand Canyon. The need for publicity is vital and our gifts will assist in getting the word out that there are worship services available while people are on vacation. Use the designated envelope in your bulleting. Lutheran Brotherhood Bonanza Branch #8237 will match the first $450.00 we raise.

Thank You

Dear Friends,

Thank you so much for including us in the groups that benefit from your Easter lily fundraiser. The money that we received was used to purchase a missile stand and alter book.  We are so grateful for the support you give us!

Sincerely,
Tammi Odegard, Secretary
Saved by Grace Lutheran Church

What is Happening
at Saved by Grace

In January I began my ministry and it has been exciting to see the growth. We have been averaging 80 at our services. We received 35 new members in January and had a pot luck after the services.

A choir was started and there are 12-15 participating and they sing every other Sunday and for special occasions.

Church School was started for adults and children, with 35 adults attending and 21 children enrolled.

We have a building fund of $65,000 and a large donation is expected in the near future.

Saved by Grace has now been given permission to start signing our charter and looking forward to becoming a congregation by November 11, 2001.

We have drawn up a Constitution and By-Laws and committees are being organized. We are planning to have our first congregational meeting November 25, 2001.

We were able to use the school for two evening services, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. We had more than 50 in attendance. Our largest attendance was Easter Sunday with 114.

God has been good to us and the people are working hard to go forward.

PEOPLE

Sabbatical Revisited

Many of you have seen my slides from my Sabbatical trip to New Zealand and Australia.  I have shared with some of you stories from my Sabbatical visit to Iowa and Minnesota.  Then while I was going through my notes and journal from last fall I realized I had yet to tell you about my Sabbatical drive past Hell.

Hell is in Arizona.  I’m not surprised, are you?  It is off Highway 93 near Wickiup and it looks like about a 24’ by 36’ shed made of old, corrugated metal.  It is a sort of a yellowish color.  The word "HELL" is in red capital letters at the top of the building.  I stopped to take this picture. (Picture not avaliable.)  The building was protected by a high, chain link fence and there did not appear to be anyone around in the heat of the day.  Hell hath no fury, two windows and no doors.  The junk inside seemed to obstruct any view from the windows to the outside and prevented us curious ‘afterlifers’ to any kind of a good look inside too.  I was buoyed by the reality that the place appeared abandoned and encouraged by the fact that there wasn’t a great need for a huge building.

Frederick Buechner wrote these thoughts on hell in a book entitled, Wishful Thinking: Dante saw written over the gated of Hell the words "Abandon all hope ye who enter here," but he must have seen wrong.  If there is suffering like in Hell, there must also be hope in Hell, because where there is life there is the Lord and giver of life, and where there is suffering he is there too because the suffering of the ones he loves is also his suffering.  Maybe Hell is the limit.  Maybe the bottomless pit is really not bottomless.  Maybe Hell is the bottom beyond which God is His mercy will not let us go.  It seems there is no depth to which God will not sink."

It seems too that a lot of Christians spend their entire life trying to not go to Hell by cautiously attempting to avoid doing anything bad rather than boldly doing good.  The way I understand what scripture says is that Hell is reserved for those who reject God.

So, as much as Hell is a mystery to us, these things we do know about it……

We tend to know what it sounds like.
We know that it is the same thing as war.
We know that it freezes over very infrequently.
We know that it can be the payment for great trouble.
We know that it is paved with good intentions.
We know that when things begin to deteriorate, it has something to do with a hand basket.
We know you can raise it.
We know things can get hotter than it.
We know it can be a compliment for doing a good job or a description of a bad job.
We know it is an informal mischievousness for no particular reason.
We know it can describe a type of day.
We know it can be a degree of speed for a bat leaving it.
We know we can give it to someone.
We know that combined with high water it is the far limit to getting things done.
We often and without reservation encourage people to go there.

"IF I MAKE MY BED IN SHEOL, THOU ART THERE," THE PSALMIST (139:8)

See you in Church!
Pastor Tom
